There are several things I learned while studying with SCJ members for a short time, though I only completed the intro lessons and did not complete the small class (which is supposed to last for 6 to 9 months) nor started learning lessons in a large class.
I will list off several things that SCJ members say and teach, whether I heard and learned them while studying with SCJ members or after I left the SCJ-affiliated group in late 2020 and then researched on SCJ and its teachings and beliefs:
- The Bible must be our standard and we must believe and teach from Scripture with no man-made teachings
- Figurative language called "the Language of Heaven" (parables)
- The meanings of "parable," "Bible", "holy", "testament", and "covenant," etc.
- History, moral teachings, prophecy, and fulfillment
- God makes promises and fulfills them
- Salvation by obedience, works, and understanding of parables
- Various symbolisms revolving around fields, trees, soil, seeds, weeds, oil, wedding clothes, mountains, birds, vines, vineyards, food, leaves, branches, fruits, etc.
- Mystery coming to an end when the time comes, and "food given at the proper time" (this refers to secret knowledge)
- Belonging to God or Satan and doing the will of either one and serving either one = possessed by God or Satan
- Four types of Heaven
- Faith is "knowledge of God's promises, belief in His promises, and acting upon our belief in His promises" (It can be shortened to "Faith = Knowledge, belief, action")
- We must always seek God through His Word with an open, humble heart
- Parables like the Parable of the Weeds (Matthew 13), the Parable of the Wedding Feast (Matthew 22), the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25), the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13 and Luke 8), the Parable of the Field (John 15), the Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13), etc. are taught in SCJ Bible studies
Key words and phrases (or variants of them) to look for in the ways recruiters say things when they recruit people:
- Bible explained in simple words
- Bible group that makes the Bible make sense
- Research project
- Finding a community of believers
Fake friendships, fake love, and fake forgiveness are common among SCJ members, and recruiters often pretend to be friends with the people they recruit and act nice towards them to try to convince them to join SCJ. SCJ Bible lessons always begin with introductory lessons (between a teacher and a new student), and sometimes recruiters, pretending to be merely students, join in the lessons. After the intro lessons, the new students sign up for small classes which are supposed to last for 6 to 9 months. Afterward, new students sign up for a large class but have to be interviewed by the large class teacher. If waitlisted, students can have one-to-one lessons with a teacher selected for them or go over Bible verses and passages with another SCJ member, usually the recruiter who recruited them. The introductory and small class Bible lessons start off with seemingly biblical teachings, but SCJ even twists the Bible to make it fit SCJ doctrines and beliefs in its intro and small class lessons. The more unbiblical teachings are taught in later lessons especially in the large class lessons, although I never took large classes.
Some buzzwords and unique phrases to recognize them:
They say they offer a bible study class, independent of man-made interpretations. They want to explain the bible with the bible.
"The bible is written in parables"
Their bible study class takes approximately 6 months, divided into 3 levels. In the first level you learn the parables, the second level is about identifying the parables in the whole bible, the last level is about the revelation.
At some point they invent the "New John", which is a person who has to testify the fulfillment of the prophecies in the present. This is Lee Man-Hee, the leader of Shincheonji.
Some topics and parables are structured by the concept of "rebellion -> destruction -> salvation", based on "2 Thessalonians 2:3".
The distinction of the "spiritual world" and the "carnal/fleshly" is often mentioned.
